Civil Engineers

How To Become

  • Complete a bachelor degree in civil engineering, such as a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours). This usually takes four years of full-time study.

  • To work independently as a Civil Engineer, most states require you to have a Professional Engineer’s Licence. You can apply for a licence after graduating from your degree and completing at least four years of practice as an engineer.

  • Consider studying a postgraduate degree to progress your career. This could be a Master of Engineering (Civil).

Overview

Civil Engineers plan, design and supervise construction projects that involve the built environment. Civil Engineers may work on public and private infrastructure projects and systems, including bridges, roads, airports, dams, buildings and water and irrigation systems. Liaising with clients and other professionals is a significant part of a Civil Engineer’s role, in addition to monitoring staff onsite.

Working Arrangements

  • Around 90% of people employed as Civil Engineers work full-time hours, in all their jobs combined.
  • Full-time workers work an average of 46 hours per week in their main job.
  • More than half of workers regularly work overtime or extra hours (either paid or unpaid).
