Electrical Engineers

How To Become

  • Complete a bachelor degree in the field of engineering. This will usually be a Bachelor of Engineering (majoring in electrical engineering). Entry to these courses is generally based on Year 12 results and having met the requirements for prerequisite subjects (usually mathematics and physics).


  • To work independently as an Electrical Engineer, most states require you to have a Professional Engineer’s Licence. This is usually gained after at least four years of practice as an engineer.


  • Electrical Engineers may undertake a Masters of Electrical Engineering in order to increase their chances of becoming a consultant, manager or project leader.

Overview

Electrical Engineers design, develop and supervise the manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance of equipment, machines and systems for the generation, distribution, utilisation and control of electric power.

Specialisations: Electrical Design Engineer, Railway Signalling Engineer, Signalling and Communications Engineer.

  • Full-time workers work an average of 44 hours per week in their main job. 
  • More than half of workers regularly work overtime or extra hours (either paid or unpaid).
