Social Workers

How To Become

  • Complete a bachelor degree in social work. Alternatively, if you already have a tertiary qualification you can complete a two-year Master of Social Work.


  • Apply for registration with the professional representative body of social workers in Australia – the Australian Association of Social Workers.


  • At least 980 hours of field education in at least two placements in two different practice areas AND one of those placements must be in direct practice


  • A high level of English Language Skill - IETLS – minimum overall score of 7.0 AND a minimum score of 7.0 in each component and no component is below 6.5


  • Social workers with several years’ experience can move into more specialised roles in family therapy, research, mental health, academia or policy and management.

Social Workers assess the social needs of individuals, families and groups, assist and empower people to develop and use the skills and resources needed to resolve social and other problems, and further human wellbeing and human rights, social justice and social development.

  • Around 64% of people employed as Social Workers work full-time hours, in all their jobs combined. 
  • Full-time workers work an average of 41 hours per week in their main job. 
  • More than a third of workers regularly work overtime or extra hours (either paid or unpaid).
